Because we are approaching the tail end of the year, it has amazed me once again that Fall has arrived. Fall, my favorite season. It is the season where I see leaves change color- a bright sight in real time that perfectly paints a picture of evolution, and how we evolve. Fall is one of my favorite seasons not only because of the baking, activities, and football games, but also because it is a time of clarity, calmness, and reflection. There is nothing I enjoy more than a Pumpkin Spice latte from Starbucks on an October day. When I step foot into one of Seattle's finest locations, I am immediately transported to 2007- a time on the Vh1 network when Jack Johnson, Brandi Carlile, Adele, and Sara Bareilles were on heavy rotation. "Coffeehouse Folk music" or singer-songwriter as it was formally called, was played in every bookstore and you could not escape it when standing on a long line waiting for your Caramel Macchiato. Music and coffee, two of my favorite things! As I was relaxing to a throwback playlist of many of these songs yesterday, I began to think "this is what fall sounds like". This is something I have strongly felt in recent years: Seasons have particular songs that we associate with them. Maybe, this is because of my own experience discovering folk music: Fall 2007, the same morning as the third grade Scholastic book fair. I always looked forward to those book fairs as I saw them as a break from the classroom. To me, it was a little bit of leisure and a pause to my troubles in mathematics. Music did get me through everything, after all.
As a music enthusiast, the music we discover and the connections we make with it most likely have a timestamp or date attached to it. If you have a photographic memory like myself, you might even get a little sentimental about these things.
The seasons of the year definitely has an effect on what we listen to, at least in my experience. In October I'm chilling to folk music, then when it's summer I'm all about country and classic rock at a barbeque. Seasons, like music, has its own patterns and characteristics: different colors, sounds, themes, and moods. Mood also reflects what I listen to. Seasons too, can be uplifting and exciting as they are a form of change. There is always something to discover in every season, especially music.
